Selecting and Applying IPC-TM-650 Test Methods Correctly
IPC-TM-650 is a library of repeatable procedures, not a stand-alone set of product acceptance limits. For example, IPC-TM-650 2.6.8 applies thermal stress to plated-through holes using a solder-float procedure, 2.3.25 addresses ionizable surface contamination, and 2.6.27 simulates convection-reflow assembly stress. The governing procurement or performance specification must identify the applicable method, revision, conditioning, sampling, and pass criteria; using a familiar method number without that context can produce a valid measurement but an invalid qualification decision.
- Define the question: decide whether the risk concerns cleanliness, interconnect survival, insulation, material properties, or another failure mode.
- Lock the revision: record the exact method suffix and date because apparatus or procedure details can change.
- Control conditioning: document drying, moisture exposure, coupon design, reflow profile, and stabilization time.
- Capture traceability: retain specimen identity, equipment calibration, operator, raw readings, units, and deviations.
- Apply acceptance separately: compare the result with the contractually cited IPC document or customer requirement.
